Individual freedom is the dream of our age. And abroad, in Iraq and Afghanistan, the attempt to enforce liberty has led to bloody mayhem and the rise of an authoritarian anti-democratic Islamism. This, in turn, has helped inspire terrorist attacks in Britain. In response, the Authorities has dismantled long-continuing laws designed to protect our freedom.

The Trap is a series of three films by Bafta-winning producer Adam Curtis that explains the origins of our contemporary, narrow thought of freedom.

It shows how a simplistic model of human beings as self-seeking, virtually robotic, creatures led to today's idea of liberty. This model was derived from ideas and techniques developed by nuclear strategists during the Cold State of war to control the behaviour of the Soviet enemy.

Mathematicians such as John Nash developed paranoid game theories whose equations required people to be seen as selfish and isolated creatures, constantly monitoring each other suspiciously always intent on their own advantage.

This model was so adult by genetic biologists, anthropologists, radical psychiatrists and free market economists, and has come to dominate both political thinking since the Seventies and the way people recall about themselves as human beings.

Yet, within this simplistic thought lay the seeds of new forms of control. And what people have forgotten is that there are other ideas of freedom. We are, says Curtis, in a trap of our ain making that controls the states, deprives u.s.a. of significant and causes expiry and chaos away.

I didn't concur with all of it or even understand it all simply information technology made me call up and was engaging and interesting every bit a result

I missed The Power of Nightmares recently so this was my beginning experience of the films from Adam Curtis. Possibly, one could say, trying to go used to his fashion while also trying to take in his cases for societal changes most self interest, marketplace forces, drugs, management styles, genetic control, economic science and God knows what. And well mayhap y'all would be right to say that because no affair how well structured the three part series is, information technology is withal a real challenge to take in and assimilate 1 point before the adjacent one comes forth.

Of course this is non a bad thing because normally watching television set is quite a vegetative state (and if anyone can vouch for that, it is me) then having something that forces you to put your brain in gear is neat thing. This isn't the same as me maxim that Curtis is totally correct in his points or that I completely belief the ground for all the theories and points of view put across here. The reviews of Power of Nightmares (for example) seem to be good when the reviewer agrees with the viewpoint and bad when the reverse is true. I detect this a shame and I suspect that it volition mostly be the same here because of course if you lot spend three hours nodding and going "preach brother" then you volition no doubt accept already decided that it is keen series.

Personally I institute the delivery and caste of research to be very impressive. The archive footage is mostly very good and the non-relevant use (eg old movies etc) is not overused and is more often than not in context. In regards the research and structure of the thesis I cannot even imagine how it is washed with a team of people who are all either on the very same word on the same page politically or are very well directed by the man at the summit because the basis for the whole argument (non only specific points) is actually well washed and supported. I don't agree with all the points fabricated or the roots of some of the social changes that Curtis suggests and I think that if you lot come to this series without whatsoever stance or thoughts of your own and then yous are probably non in the right frame of mind to appreciate it because I constitute it more than valuable every bit a tool to spark thoughts in my own head and question what I "know" and likewise question what I am being told in this series.

Unexpectedly for me, the main problem I had with it was how it tended to echo some arguments and go over topics it had already covered but this was a pocket-sized quibble for me.

Overall then an interesting and engaging thesis on the nature of recent societal change and theory. It didn't all convince me and had $.25 that I did disagree with no matter how well structured the argument was but information technology did brand me retrieve, which can only be a good thing. I'm non saying I agreed with it all or that I understood it all, simply information technology was an engaging series of films and certainly different from the rather sedentary documentaries that tend to be in the bulk.
